Assigning Plane Wave Excitation in HFSS

Hello

When we assign Plane Wave Excitation, should I select a surface then do Assign Excitation>Incident Wave>Plane Wave or should I not select a surface and just do these steps: HFSS>Excitation>Assign>Incident Wave>Plane Wave...

Is there anybody knows the difference between two?
