Qualcomm, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) has acquired CSR Limited in a deal worth $2.4 billion. The acquisition comes as the chipmaker shifts its focus towards Internet of Things (IoT).

Qualcomm had announced the agreement to acquire CSR last October, a wholly owned subsidiary of CSR Plc, operating in United Kingdom, but regulatory delays prolonged the transaction’s closure.

According to Qualcomm, the acquisition will help drive the company’s growth in Internet of Everything (IoE) and automotive – two segments, where growth is a priority. CSR holds a dominant position in the market for Bluetooth devices. It is involved in the manufacturing of chips, which are used in IoE products and automotive.

The acquisition will help establish Qualcomm’s presence in the UK. It will also help the company in augmenting a portfolio of new products, and increasing customers in IOE, which will contribute to its growth.

"CSR’s complementary strengths in connectivity, audio technologies, and systems-on-chips will help strengthen Qualcomm Technologies’ position in the IOE and automotive industries, and add to a broad and highly advanced portfolio," Qualcomm's CEO Steve Mollenkopf said in a press release.

The acquisition will add more chips into Qualcomm’s product portfolio beyond Bluetooth with wireless LTE modems, and processors. It will also improve the chipmaker’s position in the IoT market, such as refrigerators, thermostats, and TV; everything are connected wirelessly to the Internet and managed remotely through the smartphone.

Although, CSR acquisition opens opportunities for Qualcomm, the company paid over 50% premium to acquire it, compared to only 10% premium paid by Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) to acquire Altera Corporation (NASDAQ:ALTR).

Furthermore, Qualcomm focuses more towards the chip-making business, but it is struggling in the cellular radio segment; therefore, such extravagant measures during crisis seems quite risky.
