today if we still put too much attention on RISC as direction for future. then we are dead. what is new requirement?
I believe the new Requirement is: FAST, POWER SAVING, SCALABLE.
FAST -- always #1 requirement
POWER SAVING -- battery powered device will be #1 market in future 10 years including note book, cellur phone and others.
SCALABLE -- parallel usage will be show up in FPGA, ASIC and other field by system requirement.
My conclusion is forget RISC research. people need to come up new concepts such as Micode (or micoendine) scalable CPU.

说起来容易,做起来难啊。
高速,谈何容易,要达到500M以上就不是ASIC的范畴了,就是专业CPU设计了,怎么跨过1G的瓶颈?Intel跨这个瓶颈用了好几年。
功耗,都知道很重要,有的应用领域还是NO1的要求,也很难,必须有多年的技术和技巧积累,还得针对不同的应用领域,不能让功耗限制住你的强大功能,怎么去tradeoff?。
扩展适应,面就更广,怎么扩展?在那些应用上去扩展?怎么使你的IP适用于FPGA和ASIC?都还是业界一直在追求的目标!

FPGA itself is plenty of gates, which give designer lots of space for thinking of new design concept.
for example, palallelism. we can design small CPU w/ little gate count, then put CPUs together w/ some kind connection to do parallel computation. It is easy for FPGA but hard for ASIC to pure parallelism.
network packet, image, scientific calculation are suitable for this application.
another drawback is memory management unit or system bus control unit. even ARM still has lots of thing to improve in these two point. this is because of the pipeline bottle neck.
3rd brillient concept is to do specific search/calculation CPU engine for bio-genetic field. today we are on the edge to see the first sunshine of super microcodes engine for drug-medcine. I can predict there are more bio technology will use this device to do drug design for 3-D DNA application.
