Yes, you are right. Shift register is the best in a loop structure for data flow. Local variable is slower, and property node of "value" is the worst in terms of speed. Of course, if you only make one-time read/write for a simple control, the speed difference may not be so obvious.
However, a useful property node is "value(signaling)" to invoke an event.

Please run the attached example which I did for a colleague on the other day. This is done in LV 8.20. When you open the front panel, select a method from the ring, and set a quite large number to "iteration". Then run the VI to see how long the iterations take. Change the other two methods and run with the same iteration number, then you can compare their performance.
